African Theology Revisited - Richard J. Gehman

For all African Christians, African Christian Theology Revisited is a powerful plea to think through your faith in African contexts under the authority of the Word of God. Learn the key principles of biblical theology in Africa. Discover how evangelicals have significantly contributed in recent years, and how some African Theologians have failed to remain faithful to the Scriptures. Theologians and ministers in Africa will be especially equipped and encouraged to fulfill their God-given responsibility of teaching God’s truth to his people. African Christian Theology Revisited builds upon the insights of Dr. Gehman’s celebrated classic Doing African Christian Theology.

“Dr. Gehman’s work is backed with a lived experience of a life time of thirty-seven years as a missionary in Kenya. A welcome contribution in the quest for African Theology and warmly recommended for church leaders and as text for Bible colleges and Christian universities in Africa.”

Rev. Dr. Aiah Foday-Khabenje – General Secretary, Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA).

“The African church desperately and urgently needs theologians who will take seriously the recommendations of Dr. Gehman and develop theologies on issues affecting the African church in a biblical and relevant way. To that end, I strongly and enthusiastically recommend this extremely resourceful book to African theologians, theological students, research libraries and pastors. We have a saying in Hausa, a language spoken in Northern Nigeria that says, “Ga Fili, Ga doki.” (“Here is the horse. Ride it”). We have the book. Let us read it, apply it and write accordingly.”

Rev. Dr Samuel Waje Kunhiyop, Ph.D. – Professor at ECWA Theological Seminary, Kagoro, Nigeria.

For 36 years Rev. Dr. Richard J. Gehman served in Kenya with the Africa Inland Church as missionaries of the Africa Inland Mission. He received his MA from Wheaton College, the Master of Divinity from Gordon Divinity School and his Doctor of Missiology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Gehman served at Scott Theological College from 1967 to 1984; and 1994 to 2002. He succeeded Dr. Mark Shaw as the Editor of the African Journal of Evangelical Theology, 1995 – 2002 and served as a member of the Nairobi Evangelical School of Theology Governing Board from its inception in 1980 through 1994.

Seeking to evaluate African Traditional Religion in biblical perspective, this book is a must have for pastors and Bible students alike. With great knowledge of both African traditional religions and the Bible, Dr. Gehman explores the issues of the supreme being, divinities, ancestral spirits, witchcraft and sorcery in the light of God’s Word. If you are struggling with knowing the truth and error of ATR and need to know the biblical view, then this is the book for you!

“This book is excellent, thorough and full of insights. Reflecting a high degree of professionalism, it will serve as an excellent textbook for pastors. I do not hesitate to recommend this book both for the African and expatriate alike who seek to relate the Christian faith to African Traditional Religion.”

David Kitonga PH.D., Director of Africa Equip Ministry (AEM) International

“A book every university, Bible college and seminary student in Africa, and beyond, should read. Dr. Gehman only discusses the subject of African Traditional Religions and the Bible but also provides a model on how best to approach the subject.”

Samuel Ngewa PH.D., Professor of New Testament Studies at Africa International University and New Testament Editor of the Africa Bible Commentary.

“Few books balance the understanding of African Traditional Religion and its biblical and theological response the way this book does.”

Samuel Linge PH.D. Vice Principle for Ancient Affairs, Nairobi International School of Theology
